Update: Sharpton: Feds Need To Tackle Police Misconduct |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 8:28 PM - by User
|
Three New York City police officers were indicted in early December for the alleged sodomy of a 24-year-old tattoo artist, after the man was arrested for allegedly smoking marijuana outside of a Brooklyn subway station.
Richard Kern, 25, a four-year veteran, is charged with the most serious crime of using a baton to violate Michael Mineo in October. Officers Alex Cruz and Andrew Morales were indicted on the charge that they tried to cover up the sodomy.
The Rev. Al Sharpton, of the National Action Network, was the first civil rights leader to appear at Mr. Mineo’s side—even as the police department’s Internal Affairs Division and the media said there was no sodomy.

Medical Marijuana Rules Called A Burden On Police |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 8:14 PM - by User
|
A spokesman for the Michigan State Police said the department does not want the responsibility of destroying excess medical marijuana, as written in the draft rules being discussed today in Lansing.
Greg Zorotney of the State Police executive division said a better solution would be for users or caregivers to destroy excess supply or for the Michigan Department of Community Health to write rules allowing for the transfer of medical marijuana from a retired user to a new user.
"It's burdensome for law enforcement to have someone come in, asking to destroy 12 plants. Plants can grow quite big," he said to a panel of state health officials taking comments. The draft rules can be viewed at ... [Read More]

Massachusetts Gone To Pot? Police Won't Ticket Marijuana Users |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 8:02 PM - by User
|
Police departments across the state of Massachusetts reportedly will not ticket people in possession of marijuana, even if they are caught smoking it.
Officials say a new law that decriminalizes having small amounts of "pot" makes it impossible to enforce penalties because it is poorly written.
"We're just basically not enforcing it right now," said Mark R. Laverdure, chief of police in Clinton, a Central Massachusetts town of about 8,000 residents, told the Boston Globe. "You'll probably have a lot of officers that, unless there's a caller complaining about it, won't even bother with it. They probably handled a lot of it informally before and probably more so now." ... [Read More]

Lansing Hearing On Medical Marijuana Restricts Testimony |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 7:55 PM - by User
|
Michigan Messenger’s Todd Heywood is attending the Medical Marijuana proposed rules hearing this morning in Lansing at the Michigan State Secondary Complex. About 200 people are in attendance.
Approximately forty-five minutes into the hearing, the state employees conducting the hearing directed persons offering testimony about rules not to provide any comments that might duplicate concerns expressed by other attendees; a ten-minute time limit per comment had been established as the meeting began. As a public hearing conducted by a state agency, the meeting should be conducted following Michigan’s Open Meetings Act; the time limit is normal during public hearings on controversial topics, but the... Palm Springs Council To Vote On Dispensary Law |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 7:39 PM - by User
|
The Palm Springs City Council is expected to vote on Wednesday on a proposed ordinance that could make the city the first and only jurisdiction in Riverside County to allow medical marijuana dispensaries.
The proposed law, that limits dispensaries to industrial zones, will top the agenda at the council meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way.
The city now has at least four dispensaries operating illegally, with at least one more waiting on the council action to open.
A public hearing will be held on the law. Other provisions include:
-- Dispensaries would have to be set up as non-profit collectives or cooperatives, as recommended in the... [Read More]

Marc Emery and the Liberty 100 |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 7:29 PM - by User
|
The Liberty 100 is the Western Standard's list of the 100 Canadian friends of liberty who have made significant contributions to individual liberty (both personal and economic) in 2008 (Top 10, Top 25, Top 50, Top 75, Top 100). The list was selected by our publisher, Matthew Johnston, who has intimate and wide-ranging knowledge of, and familiarity with, the Canadian liberty movement.
Given that this is the first installation of an annual list, Matthew decided to also include those liberty activists whose lifetime contribution to the liberty movement deserved recognition and credit, regardless of their activities in 2008 alone.
The most controversial selection on the list appears to be that of... [Read More]

Medical Marijuana Group Sues County For Not Starting ID Card Program |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 7:14 PM - by User
|
A medical marijuana advocacy group plans to sue Solano County today for not implementing a state-mandated identification card program that protects medical marijuana patients from arrest and prosecution.
Americans for Safe Access will file the complaint in Solano County Superior Court, ASA's chief counsel Joe Elford said this morning.
Elford said Solano is among about a dozen counties in the state that have not implemented the identification card program despite state legislation adopted in 2003 and upheld on appeal in July 2008 by the California Fourth District Court of Appeal.
The counties that have not implemented the identification card program claim that federal law, which regards... [Read More]

Medical Marijuana Rules Open To Debate |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 7:10 PM - by User
|
LANSING, MI - Michigan officials still are working on the rules to guide the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
The Department of Community Health's first crack at drafting official procedures for the program ran into some opposition at a public hearing Monday.
Medical marijuana advocates say the draft rules put too many restrictions on patients. They oppose a proposal that patients and caregivers be required to keep records of the marijuana grown for use.
The new law approved by Michigan voters in November will allow patients with cancer, HIV, AIDS, glaucoma and other diseases to use marijuana to relieve symptoms on a doctor's recommendation. But the state must finalize rules for... [Read More]

Why Head Shop Raids Are Unfair and Unjust |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 3:41 PM - by User
|
How a reckless mayor, heartless federal agents and a disorganized drug-consuming public led to a pointless raid on head shops.
Duval Street is the epicenter of Key West, Fla., home to Sloppy Joe's, Ernest Hemingway's and a host of bars and hotels that have for a century captured the spark and soul of this land of the lost.
The Environmental Circus is gone, Valladares' News Stand is history, and though La Te Da still stands, Larry Formica and his pink Cadillac have long since passed. Where a beat up wooden dock and a collage of cultures once gathered on historic Mallory Square, cruise ships now pour out thousands of tourists in flowered shirts onto the city's main streets.
